Part of the mission of the Public Library of Levadia is the
guarantee that the citizens of Levadia and the wider region
will have free and open access to the information and an
unbiased environment, where everyone is able to research the
world of ideas. Another part of the mission is to offer and
to provide information in various forms.
For this purpose the Public Library of Levadia will protect
intellectual freedom, promote basic education, encourage
life-long (?)learning and provide library materials as well
as other sources of information.
As for the use of Internet as a source of information, the
library wishes to provide to all citizens the possibility
of access to the ideas and information from the entire
world, with no limitation because of education, profession,
economic status or age.
1. The access to the Internet at the Public Library of
Levadia constitutes finally a privilege and a opportunity
for the library visitors. The unacceptable or improper use
of Internet however will lead to the suspension or the
retraction of privileges of use of Internet via the library.
Illegal acts in the use of computers at the Library Centre
of Information are regulated by government regulations and
laws.
2. The Public Library of Levadia provides the possibility of
access to the Library Catalogue, but also to an
international network of databases and information. Because
of the size and complexity, the Internet cannot be
supervised or controlled from the Library or from any other
organism.
3. Many regions of the Internet contain sorts of information
that can be controversial or inadequate. The library and its
personnel do not control and do not have the possibility of
controlling information that accessed via the Internet and
also cannot be considered in charge of the contents.
Nevertheless, in an effort to protect children under the age
of 18 from potential damage,
a. on a first level there is a appropriate filtration from
the EDUNET-Pan-Hellenic School Network,
b. on a second level, the Library has installed additional
appropriate software, to prevent access to homepages that
contain harmful material, indicated in the Pan-Hellenic
School Network pages for likely "locked" sites.
Nevertheless, the software might not be able to prevent the
access to certain homepages or sites, which the parents
could characterize as unacceptable. For this reason, the
parents and only the parents are responsible and in charge
of the control of their children’s activity on the Internet.
The software control is performed only on the computers that
are expected to be used by minors.
4. The Internet is an international electronic network that
gives the Library the possibility to provide information
beyond the Library collection to its users. Nevertheless,
the personnel of the Public Library of Levadia will not have
control of the immense number of sources of information on
the Internet. It will not be possible to control:
(1) the precision of information,
(2) the availability of the sites they wish to visit
(inactive links), and
(3) the quality, the appropriateness and the desirability of
the information accessed.
Consequently, the users, and only the users, can control the
sites they reach.
The Public Central Library of Levadia maintains the rights
to alter the current policy of use at any time, in
consultation with the Library Board of Staff, and such
changes will be publicized on the library bulletin board as
well as on the library network site
